I am a graduating BCL student at St Catherine’s College. Having graduated from Oxford with a first-class undergraduate law degree and being awarded a subject prize in Company Law, I believe that my academic training has provided me with a strong academic foundation as a law mentor. My experience in mooting – champion at the ELSA Commercial Moot 2019, the Oxford Hong Kong Moot and recently representing Oxford in various international moots – underscores my command of legal knowledge.
Even though I have not had formal experience giving tutorials for undergraduates, I have worked as a law mentor for Project Access Hong Kong, a student organization providing free and accessible mentorship services for UCAS admissions to students from underprivileged backgrounds. I was responsible for mentoring two Year 12 students and providing them with an overview of the Oxbridge admissions process, guidance and recommended readings for the personal statement as well as feedback for their LNAT essays. As the head of the mentorship programme, I was not only responsible for coordinating the mentors, but also for conducting mock admissions interviews to select promising mentees for the programme. By building a social media presence and strengthening the programme’s outreach, the number of mentees participating in the programme saw a three-fold increase in two years’ time.
I also worked as a debate coach at the RedDot Academy, Singapore. I was responsible for designing the lectures and seminars for summer camp students, taking initiative to tailor the material to suit their abilities. I reduced complex concepts such as the social contract and the criminal justice system to simple and readily understandable ideas for the students. By using fun motions, I was also able to encourage the students to learn proactively and to cultivate their interest in competitive debating. At the end of the camp, my students were able to formulate substantive arguments and mount effective rebuttals.
As a part of the BAME community and a state school student, I am familiar with the difficulties and hurdles faced by students in making their Oxbridge admissions. Fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese, and having intermediate proficiency in Arabic, I am also able to communicate with students from a wide variety of countries and cultural backgrounds. I believe that I have the experience, dedication and academic credentials to become a successful tutor at Oxbridge Academy.
I look forward to hearing from you.
